Why do I need liability insurance?

Roughly four out of five Germans have liability insurance - and not without good reason. Without liability insurance, it’s possible to quickly lose a large amount of capital, especially if you cause damage to another person - in the worst cases, this can be in the millions. This means it makes perfect financial sense to protect yourself and your property with a liability insurance policy.

What will I be insured against?

Accepted Answer

You’ll be insured against personal and property damage, in addition to financial losses for which you’re liable, up to €50 million. Examples include insurance against traffic accidents (Caution: this does not replace a motor insurance policy) and damages incurred whilst playing sport, taking care of a dog, or babysitting. Also, the exchange of several locks as a consequence of key loss is covered up to the amount of €300,000. We even make sure that you can also get your money back when an uninsured person damages you or your property (up to €50 million).

When will my policy be valid from?

Accepted Answer

Your policy will be valid from the following day. Example case: You buy your policy on February 1st. You’re then covered against any damages that may occur from February 2nd. This also means that your protection will not be valid for any claims which might occur before February 2nd. If you decide to take advantage of our insurance provider switching service, you’ll receive a preliminary contract alongside your confirmation of cancellation from your current insurance provider. This contract will have a start date of 12 months in the future. As soon as the cancellation is confirmed, our start date will be edited to conform to the date on which your previous cover ends. From this date you"ll be insured with Getsafe.

Can I get insurance with Getsafe if I don’t have German citizenship?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the only requirement is that you have your usual residence in Germany.

Is my policy valid when I’m abroad?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you have worldwide protection! Even during long stays abroad - unlimited within Europe, and outside of Europe up to 5 years - you’ll enjoy the same protection as in Germany.

Is my drone insured?

Accepted Answer

By extending your liability insurance with our drone module, you’ll be protected when you’re flying your drone (up to 5.0kg) for leisure purposes. Occasional use of your drone by friends, under your supervision, is also covered. As in the basic or family modules, damages are covered up to the value of 25 million euros. This protection is valid worldwide.

Are my spouse/partner and family insured?

Accepted Answer

With our extension family you share your protection with your loved ones. The extension includes your own children (including stepchildren and adopted children) and those of your partner if you live in the same household. Your registered partner or spouse is also insured, as well as your partner who lives in the same household with you.

Are my animals insured?

Accepted Answer

We cover the statutory liability of the policy holder as keeper of, or carer for: tame pets, small domesticated animals and bees. This includes pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits, pigeons, chickens, other poultry and bees, as long as they are kept for private purposes. Wild small animals (such as spiders, chameleons, Norway rats) are also insured.

Statutory liability as keeper of, or carer for the following animals is not included:

dogs, cattle, horses and other riding animals
and animals used for commercial or agricultural purposes.

When will the first payment for my insurance be taken?

Accepted Answer

The payment for the first month of the base liability insurance policy is made in advance - if you purchase the policy on February 1st, and the contract begins straight away, you’ll pay the first fee directly on February 1st. A contract is created alongside the first payment. For every extension module, you’ll pay on the date on which the payment for the base liability module is due to recur. (Your protection will still be valid from the day following the purchase.) Following on from the above example, if you add on the drone extension module on February 15th, your payment on March 1st will include the basic liability cover, the drone module for the following month, as well as a pro rata payment for the drone module from February 15th to March 1st.
