Claims

Contents insurance is not rocket science. We explain everything you need to know about claims in this glossary article.

How soon can I make a contents insurance claim?

You can normally make a claim as soon as your insurance policy begins. This may be a day after purchasing insurance, which is the case with Getsafe. It’s important to note that you can only claim for incidents that happened after you became insured. For example, you couldn’t take out contents insurance after a burglary and then make a retrospective claim. If you were burgled while having an active policy, you could make a claim.

How do I make a contents insurance claim?

Every insurer has a slightly different process for making a claim. Many will require you to get in touch via email or on the phone. With Getsafe, you can file a claim using the Getsafe app in addition to contacting the Customer Service team directly.

What can you claim for with contents insurance?

Your household contents are items that you own and keep in your home. You can often think of these as things you would take with you when you move. Contents insurance covers these belongings and you can claim for them. However, some providers may require additional coverage add-ons or extensions to cover particular items, such as high-value items or mobile phones. Additionally, the manner in which objects become damaged may affect whether you can claim or not. For example, with Getsafe (and most other providers), you need an extension to cover accidental damage.

Can I cancel contents insurance after making a claim?

This depends on your insurance provider. Some insurers require you to sign up for a certain period of time, in which you may not cancel. Getsafe gives you the option to cancel at any time – meaning that you could cancel after making a claim. Making a claim doesn’t affect your right to cancellation with an insurer. Nonetheless, other conditions, such as a minimum contract period, will do.

Do you need receipts to make contents insurance claims?

As is the case with most things related to insurance, this depends on your insurance provider. Some will want receipts or photos of the stolen item before paying out a claim. Others can be more lenient. The type of item also plays a role. For lower value objects, insurers may not want to see proof of purchase. However, this could be required for claiming on higher value items. You might also be asked to declare expensive items when signing up for your policy.
