Personal possessions

Contents insurance is not rocket science. We explain everything you need to know about personal possessions in this glossary article.

    What is personal possessions insurance?

Personal possessions insurance covers belongings you take with you outside of your home. Similar to contents insurance, it protects against theft or burglary – just outside of your home rather than purely within it.

What is the difference between personal possessions insurance and contents insurance?

Contents insurance only covers your belongings within your home from insured risks. With standard contents insurance, anything that becomes damaged or lost outside of your home wouldn’t be covered. Personal possessions insurance covers belongings you take with you when you’re out and about, such as laptops or jewellery. If they’re stolen while you’re at a cafe, for example, you would be able to claim compensation.

Can I get personal possessions insurance without contents insurance?

This depends on your insurer. However, it is most common for personal possessions to come in the form of an add-on or extension for contents insurance, as it relates to your belongings. This is how it works with Getsafe.

Should I get personal possessions insurance?

This depends on your circumstances. If you have high-value items, such as an iPhone, expensive jewellery, or a laptop and take them out with you to a cafe, for example, it’s a great idea to get personal possessions insurance. If you don’t have it and something happens to your possessions while you’re out, you wouldn’t be covered. Personal possessions insurance ensures you’re covered outside your home. However, if you don’t have high-value items or don’t take them out with you, you may not need it.

How does personal possessions insurance work with Getsafe?

Getsafe offers personal possessions insurance in the form of an extension for contents insurance. You can add this when you purchase contents insurance or at a later date via the app. You don’t need an extra policy, you simply need to add to your contents insurance for extra cover.
