A new job in a different city, the next step in a relationship – there are many reasons for moving. But a move can quickly become stressful and nerve-wracking since there are many tasks that are easily forgotten and yet really important. With early planning and coordination, you won’t lose track and are well prepared for a smooth relocation. To help you, we have prepared two checklists.

What do you have to consider before and after the move?

Before the move:

  • Cancel your old tenancy agreement: Don’t forget the notice period.
  • Arrange renovations: You should clarify what you still have to renovate in the old apartment before moving out.
  • Set up a redirection order: It will forward your mail to your new address for a certain period of time.
  • Inform public utilities: Check electricity and gas meter readings and cancel contracts if necessary.
  • Organise telephone and DSL: The special right of termination with telephone and internet providers gives you the opportunity to terminate your contract early if the suppliers cannot provide the old services at your new place of residence. However, if this is the case, they will have to move with you.
  • Secure no-parking zone: You can easily apply for a parking prohibition for your move online.
  • Rent a van: The general rule is that 0.75 cubic metres of loading capacity are required per square metre of living space. This means that for a three-room apartment with 90 square metres you need just under 68 cubic metres of loading capacity. With a 7.5 tonne truck you would have to drive twice.
  • Organise friends: If many people help you on the moving day, everything goes much faster and can also be fun.
  • Rent or buy moving boxes: You have two options: On the internet you can find sturdy cartons for about £1.20 each, but you end up with a lot of cardboard. If you want to rent cardboard boxes, this is usually more expensive because they are delivered and picked up again. It is important not to choose boxes that are too large, as they can be very heavy.
  • Clear out: A move is a very good way to clear out old belongings.
  • Label cartons: It’s not enough to distinguish between rooms. You should describe in more detail what in the boxes is – this makes it easier to put them in the right room.
  • Plan the furnishing: It would be best to attach a plan to each room showing where the furniture belongs. With a colour coding system, you can assign a different colour to each room in advance and assign the respective colours to the pieces of furniture.

After the move:

  • Inform authorities about new address: This includes the residents‘ registration office etc.
  • Order a relocation notification online: This way you can easily inform your most important contract partners about your new address.
  • Check insurance: Remember to inform your insurance company about your change of address.
  • Update your home contents insurance: If the living space or the value of the facility has changed, you should inform your insurance company.
  • Collect receipts: If you had to move for professional reasons, you can have some of the expenses for your move deducted from your tax bill.
  • Update subscriptions and memberships: A move is a good way to decide which subscriptions you want to cancel and which ones are worth taking with you to your new address.
