Description
Your income pays for everything you care about. If you are out of work due to illness or an accident, the costs keep going. Income Protection Insurance steps in so your plans do not have to be put on ice.
You get a monthly payout when you cannot do your job for health reasons, including mental health. Short flu does not count, long term loss of work does. State support is limited, usually only up to 40 percent of gross pay.

Job loss or termination
Unemployment, workforce reduction ("layoffs"), or termination without health-related inability to work are not insured. For this you need a separate unemployment insurance as a separate product.

Who can apply and when is the right time to get cover?
Most people with income can get insured, including students, apprentices, employees and self-employed. Even for children or schoolchildren, coverage can be arranged in advance. Health and job are important. The earlier you start, the cheaper it usually is. Many people start already during their studies or training.
What exactly is covered and what is not?
You are covered if illness or an accident stops you from doing your current job for a longer period, for example due to burnout, depression, cancer, heart disease or chronic pain. Not covered, short term sickness that heals quickly, job loss or dismissal.
Is there a waiting period before payments start?
There is no fixed waiting time in most cases. You must meet the policy definition and provide medical evidence. After approval, the monthly benefit starts from the date set in your policy, often backdated to the first eligible month.
How do I make a claim and how long does it take?
Tell us in the app or contact our team and we guide you. You share medical reports and proof of income. The insurer reviews your case and may ask follow up questions. Timelines vary by case. Many are settled in weeks, complex cases can take longer. We keep you posted.
Can I receive payments if I also get the German state disability pension?
Yes, your private cover pays in addition. The state pension is only paid in full if you cannot perform any reasonable work for more than three hours a day, and even then it is often only up to around 40 percent of your last gross salary. The income protection insurance payment helps to close the gap.
Am I covered if I move abroad or work outside Germany?
Yes, cover can continue if you live or work abroad, as long as you keep paying and meet the policy terms. Some insurers use country lists or ask for updated medical proof. Tell us about your move early and we will check your options and any limits before you go.
