Why get drone liability insurance?

As a drone owner, you are responsible for any damage caused by your drone. Drone liability insurance is an insurance extension that protects you if damage has been caused by your drone.

Insured up to €50 million
Worldwide coverage
Cover unlimited drones up to 5kg

Why you need drone insurance

    It’s legally required

Drone liability insurance has been mandatory in Germany since 2005, regardless of whether a drone is used privately or commercially. This applies to all drones, regardless of their size or weight.

    Because accidents happen

You thought that flying your drone in the countryside would be stress-free, but somehow you managed to fly your drone into some power cables, causing a power outage. Your drone liability insurance will come to the rescue!

    It covers you worldwide

Planning to fly your drone over the temples in Thailand or the Tuscan hills in Italy? Most countries require proof of drone liability insurance to fly your drone there, and for those which do not, it is still highly recommended.

    It also covers others

Your friend asks to take your drone for a spin. However, they quickly realize they are lacking practice and crash your drone into your neighbor’s new solar panels. As long as you were present when the damage happened, it’s covered!

When we cover a drone incident

    • Damage to others' property

Your drone accidentally damages someone else's property, for example a deep scratch on a parked car, a broken roof tile, or a power outage caused by touching overhead cables. Valid claims up to EUR 50 million covered.

    • Injury to a person

Your drone causes an accident that injures someone during a private flight, such as a collision in the park or a cut from the propellers. Medical costs and valid claims up to EUR 50 million covered.

    Who and what is protected

    • Worldwide private flights

Incidents during private drone flights worldwide are covered when you follow local laws and rules. Many countries require proof of insurance, so keep your policy handy when you travel.

    • Policyholder as owner

You as the owner and pilot are insured when operating your drone within legal rules. Your liability as the holder of the drone is included.

    • Guest pilots under supervision

Friends or family who fly your drone while you are present are included. If an accident happens during that supervised flight, their third party liability is covered by your policy.

    • Unlimited drones up to 5 kg

Any number of privately used drones with a take-off weight up to 5 kilograms are covered. You do not need to list each drone, they are included as long as they meet the weight limit.

What we do when things go wrong

    • Claims handling and payout

We investigate the case, communicate with the injured party and pay valid claims up to your limit of 50 million euros. If a claim is not justified, we defend you at our expense.

    • Defense against unjustified claims

If a claim is unfounded, we defend you and cover legal costs. This includes lawyer fees and court costs needed to reject or reduce the claim.

    • Fast help in the app

Report incidents in the Getsafe app at any time, get guidance on next steps and track progress. Our team is on hand to help you collect details and move your claim forward quickly.

    • Digital policy documents

Access your policy and proof of cover on your phone, handy for checks abroad and club rules. Send documents by email or show them on screen when authorities ask for evidence.

Drone and Personal Liability Insurance: Two are better than one!

Getsafe’s drone liability insurance is an extension to our personal liability insurance, which was rated “very good cover for the money” by Stiftung Warentest, Germany’s go-to organisation for unbiased ratings on consumer products. If you opt for Getsafe, you’re doubly insured at a great price.

      Trustpilot reviews

      Your questions,
      clearly answered.

Is drone insurance mandatory in Germany?

Yes. Liability insurance has been mandatory for every drone in Germany since 2005. Our coverage protects you for private use. Without insurance, you face fines and have to cover damages yourself.

What is covered, and what is not?

Covered: Third-party injury and property damage up to 50 million euros, worldwide. Private flights only. Any number of drones up to 5 kg. A friend can fly if you are present. Not covered: damage to your drone, intentional acts, commercial flights, FPV flights over 120 m.

Who can get it, and can I insure multiple drones?

You need our Private Liability insurance and simply add the Drone Add-On to it. We cover any number of privately used drones up to 5 kg each under this single policy. Setup is done in the app in just a few minutes.

When does my cover start, and is there a waiting period?

There is no waiting period. Cover starts on the date shown in your policy once your application is approved. You choose the start date during checkout, and it can be today or any future date. You are insured as soon as your first payment goes through.

Am I covered abroad, with FPV goggles, or when a friend flies?

Yes, your coverage is worldwide. Many countries require proof of insurance, which we will naturally provide for you. Remember to always stick to local laws. FPV (First Person View) flights are covered up to 120 meters in height; coverage does not extend beyond that. Your friends are allowed to fly as long as you are present and supervising.

How do I file a claim if my drone causes damage?

Open the Getsafe app, tap Claims, and follow the steps. Share what happened, photos, and contact details of others involved. We confirm cover, keep you updated, and handle the rest.
