Getsafe enters the health insurance market: Germans leave nine billion euros on the table with health insurance companies

Heidelberg, December 1, 2025 – Getsafe is expanding its range of services to include health insurance, thereby addressing a massive problem: insured persons in Germany are wasting billions every year because they are with the wrong health insurance company.

An analysis of its own customer base shows that the more than 500,000 Getsafe customers could save an average of €300 to €400 per year by switching to the optimal insurance company – through lower premiums and more suitable additional services. This corresponds to a savings potential of up to €200 million in the Getsafe customer base alone. Extrapolated to about one-third of all 74 million people with statutory health insurance in Germany who are insured with suboptimal health insurance companies, this results in an economic optimization potential of at least €9 billion annually. The problem is exacerbated by continuously rising health insurance contributions: the average additional contribution has jumped from 1.7 percent in 2024 to 2.5 percent in 2025 – and is already expected to reach 2.9 percent in 2026. The contribution rates of the individual health insurance funds differ by up to 2.2 percentage points.

“Millions of Germans are wasting money because they do not have optimal health insurance. Our data analysis of 500,000 customers confirms the enormous optimization potential of around 9 billion euros annually. We are now making this digitally accessible.”

Without prevention, the funding gap cannot be closed

The German healthcare system is facing an enormous challenge: by 2040, there could be a funding gap of up to €50 billion, according to a study by the IGES Institute commissioned by the Bertelsmann Foundation. “Without massive new debt, this gap can only be closed by a paradigm shift: away from pure treatment and toward digital prevention,” says Wiens.

The key lies in choosing the optimal health insurance provider and making maximum use of preventive services. Many insured individuals waste hundreds of euros in unused additional services each year because their health insurance provider does not suit their needs. The differences between health insurance companies are significant: while some health insurance companies pay up to €1,440 per year for preventive services, for example, others only reimburse the statutory minimum of around €150 per year.

However, the real problem lies deeper: preventive services are hardly used at all – regardless of whether they are offered by public health insurance companies or private insurers. The figures are alarming: according to the GKV Prevention Report, only around 1% of GKV insured persons take advantage of individual prevention courses. The priorities are reflected in the budget: according to the BKK umbrella organization, health insurance companies invest just €8.49 per insured person per year in prevention – with total expenditure of over €4,000 per person.

The reason for the low usage: there is a lack of the right incentives and digital access to motivate people in the long term. Getsafe therefore launched its “Safepoints” program at the end of 2024, which shows that digital prevention incentives work. Customers collect points by learning how to actively reduce their risks – from fire safety and burglary prevention to health issues. Engagement is well above the industry average: more than half of Getsafe customers actively use the program and regularly collect points through quizzes, calculators, and interactive content.

“The insurance industry – whether public or private – must focus heavily on digitally supported prevention,” emphasizes Christian Wiens. “This is the only way we can close the financing gap and improve people's health at the same time.”
