Your insurance review

“We cannot direct the wind but we can adjust the sails.” – Dolly Parton

You don’t need a mop or a feather duster for our kind of spring cleaning. Simply treat yourself to your favourite drink and start by taking stock: What insurance do you currently have? What might you be missing? And where can you even save money by adjusting your protection? Don’t worry, we are here to help you and ask the right questions so that you are fully covered.

Here comes our insurance checklist:

  1. Have you covered all compulsory insurances?
  2. Have you moved house recently?
  3. Has your relationship status changed?
  4. Are your contact and payment details up to date?
  5. Has the value of your belongings increased?
  6. Did anything happen lately that you were not sufficiently prepared for?
  7. Which insurance policies can you only deal with at a later date?

1. Have you covered all compulsory insurances?

It’s not always up to you whether to buy insurance or not. For certain insurances, the law makes the decision for you. A classic example is motor third party liability insurance. You have to present this when you register your car.

Do you have a dog? Then dog liability insurance may be compulsory for you. It is in Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Thuringia, and Schleswig-Holstein. However, dog liability insurance is worthwhile for all dog lovers. Most other pets are already covered by your personal liability insurance and need no dedicated insurance policy.

2. Have you moved house recently?

A move is a big change – and it’s also crucial for all insurance policies. Keep your insurer in the loop about your new address to make sure that you are properly insured. Did you also remember to adjust the square metres of your contents insurance? This is important in order to prevent underinsurance. Simply contact customer service.

If you live in a shared flat or have moved in with your partner, you can share an insurance policy. Good news! It’s free to insure your new flatmates.

3. Has your relationship status changed?

When getting married or starting a family, your insurance needs change – and in many cases you may want to combine insurance policies. You can save some money by cancelling the policies that you no longer need. Check your liability, contents and legal insurance. For example, you can extend your private liability insurance with the family coverage option.

What if your relationship has come to an end? In that case, a review is necessary to make sure you are properly protected: Have you taken your own insurance policy for all jointly held insurance policies? Or is a change of tariff an option because you do not need to insure another person?

4.  Are your contact and payment details up to date?

Don’t forget to check your personal data. Your insurer may need to contact you at some point, such as when you make a claim. For this reason, it’s crucial to keep your contact details up to date. You’ll typically be asked for a telephone number, email address, or both.

Likewise, ensuring your premium payments go through is also vital. If you fail to pay, your insurance could lapse – leaving your belongings uncovered. Make sure your payment method is still valid so that you’re properly covered at all times.

5. Has the value of your belongings increased?

Perhaps you have installed a new kitchen? Or have you bought expensive furniture and electrical appliances? Even an inheritance such as a painting from your great-aunt has an impact on your contents insurance.

Check whether the insured amount still corresponds to the value of your belongings or whether it can and should be modified. To do this, simply contact our customer service. It may also be worthwhile to adjust your deductible or change your insurance tariff. If you're wondering what the benefits are, our team will be happy to help you.

Did you find a drone under the Christmas tree? Then remember to extend your liability insurance so that your shiny new toy is properly covered. You can also insure a new bicycle: With bicycle protection, you are taking precautions against theft.

6. Did anything happen lately that you were not sufficiently prepared for?

The last couple of years have shown how unpredictable the weather can be. With the extension to natural hazards, your property is also insured when force majeure is involved. And if you’ve had some mishaps lately, you can protect yourself better in the future – for example, by extending your cover to all glazed furniture via a glass extension.

Perhaps there were other unforeseen situations: A dispute with the neighbours, for example, can quickly become very unpleasant and expensive without the necessary support. So it’s good if you have legal protection to help you resolve any legal matters.

Unfortunately, good health is not guaranteed either. Especially when it comes to dental treatment, the statutory health insurance often only covers a small part of the costs. With supplementary dental insurance, future visits to the dentist will be less strenuous for you and your wallet.

7. Which insurance policies can you only deal with at a later date?

Is your car insurance getting more and more expensive? Then make a note of 30 November. This is the deadline for most insurers to change your car insurance. If you miss it, your contract will automatically be extended for another year. That’s one problem that you will never encounter with us. Getsafe offers you complete flexibility. Our car insurance can be cancelled at any time, just like most of our insurance products.

All questions answered to your satisfaction? Congratulations, your spring cleaning is done and dusted – you’re all set for now!
